| Abstrack |
| This research investigates the involvement of women in ecotourism destinations in Surakarta region as an alternative for improving their social, cultural and economic status and roles in societies. Primary data were collected using site observations and in-depth interviews, whereas secondary data were in a form of statistics and relevant information. Samples were selected using purposive sampling system in which respondents were determined based on several criteria purposed by the researchers. Findings indicate that women have been involved, to a certain extent, in ecotourism destinations in Surakarta region. There were two different groups of women who were involved i.e. high stratum and mid and lower stratum. The formmer was actively involved in any kinds of activities including decision making as they were the owners of the attractions. The latter, although has been involved, was pasive. The respondents mostly consider that being involved in ecotourism destinations means that they have more power in society and family. They believed that economically they were advantageous as they can contribute to the running of the family budget. Culturally, it was believed that by being involved they had more reponsibility in preserving local culture or identity. |
